I know its tempting and I am not just talking about the double Cheeseburger above. As we get older, protein becomes more crucial for cellular growth, repair, and function. That being said, that’s not a blanket endorsement for all foods rich in protein. Its worth going over the potential health conditions red meat can contribute to.

1. Reduce Acid Levels

Our body needs a balanced pH level for optimal health. Unfortunately, a lot of the popular foods consumed are acidic. Red meat is acidic as is soda, coffee, and white flour. The body cannot neutralize the acid when following a diet that only includes those foods. The body then becomes more susceptible to diseases which is why it is imperative we especially seniors should follow a diet-rich in vegetables, which are alkaline.

2. Prevents Constipation

Its become often common for seniors facing difficulties with their digestive health. Red meat worsens it. Since red meat is rich in saturated fats and useless calories, it can lead to inflammation and cause plaque buildup and narrow arteries. If it becomes chronic, the chances of contracting cancer and other serious illnesses become likely. The body digests it more slowly than other foods-the reduced rate of digestion can lead to constipation, bloating, and abdominal pain. There is a common misconception that because it is not a carbohydrate, its a healthy option when it can contribute to obesity just as much as sugary foods. Little to no red meat helps older adults reduce blood viscosity and boost their arterial function. Seniors would be wise to focus on lean proteins such as fish, chicken, and tofu along with fiber-rich foods if they want to increase their digestive regularity especially as maintaining a healthy weight becomes more difficult and a necessity.

3. Boost Energy Levels

I can vouch for this from experience. Seeing that the body digests red meat slowly especially when your metabolism is slower at old age, seniors may feel sluggish and in need of a nap. Red meat impacts the hormone levels leading to a decrease in energy levels. It also raises estrogen levels too high throwing the body’s hormonal balance depleting the body’s energy.
